Some customer at Japanese customs walked away with a gift—pot! A Japanese customs official had planted 142 grams of cannabis in the unsuspecting traveler's suitcase in order to test their drug-sniffiing dogs.
However, the official forgot whose suitcase he put the drugs in and the dog didn't find them. So the dog failed the drug test. Officials apologized to the traveler but no one came forward to return the drugs, which were worth about $10,000 in Japan.
Customs officials said the officer who planted the drugs was acting against instructions. A more controlled environment was necessary to test the dog's abilities.
"I knew that using passengers' bags is prohibited," the officer was quoted as saying by the customs spokeswoman, "but I did it because I wanted to improve the sniffer dog's abilities."
