The Starbucks Logo Is Everywhere, But There's So Much You Can Do With It

Everyone knows the famous smile of the Starbucks mermaid. She’s just about everywhere. But while most people look at her and think of sweet, sweet caffeine, Seoul-based artist Soo Min Kim sees endless opportunities for humor in the green lady.

Using a perfectly matched green marker, correction fluid, and some scissors, he explores the secret life of the Starbucks mermaid.

Using pieces of the original image, Kim creates new compositions.

The mermaid can take on many forms.

Kim also experiments with 3-D images to create eye-catching pieces like this.

Nothing lewd to see here, people!

At times, the artist leaves very little trace of the original mermaid.

The possibilities really are endless!

Just like the ideal supply of Starbucks lattes, am I right?

Did You Spill Your Coffee? That's Not A Problem For This Clever Coffee Artist

Painting with coffee and creating other food-based art is all the rage right now. Occasionally, though, someone comes along and ups the ante a bit, pushing the trend even further. One such artist is Ghidaq al-Nizar, who creates magical little scenes using the remnants of his morning brew.

Al-Nizar calls using his leftovers to make art “zero-waste coffee,” meaning he uses everything, including the grounds, in his creation process.

He also paints on unique surfaces besides paper, including dried leaves. The coffee tones on the leaves’ natural colors create a warm, earthy palette of soft browns. His paintings can be found on plates, as well.

So why paint with coffee and not, say, paint? For al-Nizar, it’s all about feeling, and, like may people, he has some strong feelings about coffee. “I love intimacy,” he says. “I feel it with coffee and it’s fun to have fun with something you love. So I can’t find any better medium to celebrate my feelings. Artists have to feel when they do something, and I think it applies for everyone…If you can’t feel it, you will leave it.”

He also gets creative with how he sets up his scenes, like in this piece, which is built off of a handprint.

Sometimes, other items get involved.

He even gets sculptural, using the grounds to create 3-D elements.

You can see much more of al-Nizar’s work on his Facebook and Instagram, where he updates his portfolio with each cup of coffee — and sometimes branches out and makes art on latte foam. We suggest enjoying his art with a nice cup of your favorite brew.

Where Other People Might See A Mess, One Artist Sees The Perfect Opportunity

If you’ve ever spilled anything before, you probably reacted like most of us: you groan, roll your eyes, and reach for the mop. If you’re unlucky, you might have to break out the stain removal supplies, too. Yet for artist Giulia Bernardelli, a spill is a perfect opportunity to create something unexpected.

The Mantua, Italy-based artist uses everyday food items like coffee, tea, wine, and fruit to create her paintings.

Instead of using traditional paints, Bernardelli decided to focus on more accessible materials for her art. “Everything that I needed was around me, if I looked carefully,” she says. “I decided to replace the paint brush with what nature offered, such as leaves, fruit skins, [and] food. All these elements feature different colors and textures.”

Bernardelli began painting with coffee by chance almost a year ago. It started with an accident — she knocked over a cup of coffee, but instead of seeing the mess, she saw the many rich shades of brown and the possibility to use them to create something new. Even now that she’s developed a system to create these paintings, she still loves the spontaneity of the spill. “In my photos, I try to catch the magic of a moment, as if the coffee created a story by toppling,” she explains.

Today, Bernardelli uses many ingredients in her art.

Bernardelli says that the secret to her art is imagining the potential of the materials. Things like coffee, jam, wine, or Nutella can become artists’ media if imagined outside of their everyday roles as food and drink. She also never plans out her work, letting the inspiration come to her, trusting her instincts to tell her when a smear of honey or a spilled drop of liqueur will make a good composition. “When I drink coffee, I reflect on the nuances that I could create if I flipped it on the table,” Bernardelli explains. “At breakfast, I can imagine the footprints left by a cat who walked into the jam.”

She’s also branched out from just using spills as her starting point.

And if she has any advice for aspiring artists, it would be this:
