When you bring a sweet animal companion into your home, you are making a promise to care for them, love them, and keep them safe from harm. Unfortunately, too many heartless people forget that as soon as any minor inconvenience arrises. Instead of finding a compassionate solution, they simply toss the poor things aside.

This sad girl was the victim of that cruelty, abandoned in a field to starve and die alone.

She was curled up into a ball and disturbingly skinny.

She didn’t hesitate or put up any fight when rescuers approached her, barely able to move.

They immediately brought her to an emergency vet clinic.

Covered in mange and sores, professionals began treating her wounds.

But she never gave up, which inspired them to name her after Xena, the fierce warrior princess.

After a month, her coat is growing back.

The friendly girl finally has a chance at real happiness.

Of course, Xena will still require further treatment to get her all the way back on her feet. And those procedures don’t come cheap. It’s incredible the amount of cruelty some humans can dish out to animals. It never ceases to amaze me the insanely torturous things we do to creatures who depend on us and trust that we’ll provide everything for food, comfort, and safety.

That’s why this story is especially disgusting. Someone abandoned a poor, sick, and blind dog on a park bench in California. It was a disgraceful act, but luckily, some heroes came to save the day.

This is Poly. She was abandoned on a park bench in California. She is blind, suffers from a heart and skin condition, and is totally dependent on humans to survive.

Which is why it was insanely cruel for a person to leave her for dead in an unfamiliar place.

Luckily, the people at the Santa Barbara County Animal Services found her and were able to rescue her.

For now, Poly is spending time in a foster home, getting treated for her illnesses and waiting to be adopted by someone who wants to be her forever family.

Understandably so, her medical bills are piling up, so an account was set up to help pay for her expenses.

When a local Texas resident was on his very early morning drive to work, he noticed a box on the side of the road. It looked like a box for a desk fan, and he figured that he could use it at the office…so he tossed it into the back of his pickup. Who doesn’t like free things? But when he stopped at a gas station and took a peek inside at his free roadside find, he was shocked to find that it wasn’t a fan at all…

This will break your heart in two.

Thank goodness the person who did this terrible thing will be punished for his actions. All too often, there is no justice for the animals that are abandoned like this. It’s so hard to understand how anyone could ever do something so cruel. Now we can only hope that this sweet pup will learn to trust people again, and that she finds a loving forever home soon.

When we’re hungry, we go to our kitchen or (if you’re like me) have a fast food place whip something up for us in a jiffy. Our animal friends don’t have that luxury and rely on us to provide the basics they need to survive.

This poor pup, however, was abandoned and left to fend for himself in Queens, NY. He was discovered curled up in a field, severely emaciated and in need of immediate care.

The kind stranger who found him brought the sweet boy to a nearby shelter, but they didn’t have quite the necessary means to treat his extreme case.

They decided to contact Adopt a Boxer Rescue, who were able to provide more proper care.

And despite his tragic condition, the cutie couldn’t help but wag his tail with joy.

Rescuers weren’t sure the pup, now going by Brewster, would be able to make it through the night.

But the tough fella wasn’t giving up.

They began feeding him slowly every two hours and providing him with nutritious fluids.

Brewster still has a long road ahead of him, but he’s getting stronger every day.

And he’s totally loving life with his new foster family!

While he continues to recover, his former owner, who allowed him to starve over a three-month period, has been arrested and charged with a felony for animal cruelty.

The severe rains of late summer and early autumn have caused major flooding along the eastern coast of the United States, forcing many people to flee their homes for higher ground. Conway, South Carolina, was hit hard by the flooding, but amid the panic and uncertainty, a beautiful new friendship was born.

Alex Scroggins was in Conway, SC, helping a family gather belongings when he spied a dog on a neighbor’s porch. As the waters were rising and people were rushing around, the dog was understandably frightened. But Scroggins assumed that the dog’s owners were nearby. After all, who would leave a dog trapped in a flood?

Well, someone did. When the dog remained on the flooded porch, Scroggins finally asked someone what was going on. It turns out the dog’s owner had left a few days prior — and left the dog behind.

On learning that the dog had been so callously abandoned, Scroggins decided to step in. “I approached him, and he was skittish at first, since his owner had left him high and dry,” he recalls. “After I put my hand out and let him get used to me, he calmed down and I pet him.”

“We scooped him up and took him to safety on the boat,” Scroggins said. “He was almost without a dry place to stand by the time I found him. That dog was going to be swept out.”

With the dog loaded up into the boat, he could be safely transported away from the flood. You can see him here peeking out from behind the couch.

After getting to safety, Scroggins tried to find a no-kill shelter for the dog, but they were all full. Not only that, but the dog refused to leave his side. He named the pup Lucky.

He also learned that the original owner had no interest in getting the dog back, and that the Humane Society had been called in on this person for negligence before.

So that’s how Scroggins ended up with the dog, who he’s since named Lucky. He hadn’t planned on getting a dog, but he’s okay with how things have turned out. “I feel like [Lucky] understands what happened, ’cause now he refuses to leave my side,” he says. “It makes me feel better knowing the dog is in a better place than he was. If you see someone in need of help and you can do something, then do something — that goes for people and animals. If you can help out, try. That’s what I hope people take away from this.”

The people of Greece aren’t the only ones suffering from the economic troubles that are weighing the country down. When the citizens can hardly bear to support and feed themselves and their children, pets fall to the wayside. For most families, it’s a sorrowful decision to surrender their beloved family pets or leave them to fend for themselves on the streets. But there are others who seem to get some sick joy from watching these poor, defenseless animals suffer.

Theoklitos Proestakis used to be a dentist, but he gave up everything — literally all of his things and his job — to help as many dogs as he could.

Proestakis, known as Takis, used to be a dentist in Lerapetra, a town in the south of Crete, but he couldn’t stand what he was seeing.

Spaying and neutering animals isn’t widely practiced in Greece, simply because of the expense.

Puppies are discarded on the regular, on top of all the older dogs being abandoned.

The amount of dogs wandering the streets was too much for him to bear in good conscience.

So he gave up his job, his car, and used all of his money to help as many dogs as possible.

Three years ago, he singlehandedly started a shelter without any financial help. He was struggling to keep the operation afloat until social media caught wind of one of the more extreme rescues…

Hope was skinned alive by some monster before being thrown away like trash to suffer in the hot, dry sun.

But Takis wasn’t about to let her die.

This is Hope now, doing light-years better. When people saw the miracles Takis was working, fundraising sites and inquiries started popping up from all corners of the world.

Most of the donations come from other parts of Europe and the United States.

Takis has saved over 200 dogs to date and has re-homed about 40 of them.

There’s not a day that goes by that he doesn’t find another dying dog in the streets.

He works seven days a week, full-time. Even when he goes home, he spends time posting his pups online in hopes of finding them new families.

The expense for feeding as many dogs as Takis has to is astronomical, but he’s glad to make it happen.

But now that some of his animals have sponsors and people are donating to his cause, the strain has been lifted a bit, and the dogs are getting fed every day.

Last month, Takis was even able to afford a car to transport the pups to the vet in! This is a huge milestone.

You can really tell all the dogs are so happy to be living in the shelter.

They get so much love, attention, and care from one very dedicated man.

Takis will continue to help the animals suffering from human political failure for as long as there is a need.

Oh, and he doesn’t forget about all the kitties that need his help, too.

“It’s difficult but I love it. I work so hard here but when I see the dogs happy and enjoying themselves and learning to trust people again, then it’s all worth it.”

For one man to leave a comfortable, stable life behind in order to pursue an unsure road like this is truly noble. If only more people were like Takis, the world would be a much better place.

While walking along the streets of Hong Kong, Amanda Ho Min-ching and her friends noticed this poor pup injured and alone. Instead of turning away from the tragic situation, they gathered with other locals to bring the sweet girl to an emergency veterinary center.

They named her Barry and as she was receiving care at the hospital, Min-ching helped to organize an online group to spread Barry’s urgent need for assistance.

She was suffering severe wounds and a swollen tongue.

Knowing the poor girl had a long road of recovery ahead of her (and the medical bills that come with it), Min-ching and her friends set up a Facebook group in the hopes of inspiring donations.

It didn’t take long for more than 3,000 kind strangers to join the group and pour in nearly $22,000 in funds on her behalf.

With their help, she has successfully completed her first surgery and is healing well.

Barry isn’t out of the woods yet, but with so many people on her side it’s safe to say she’s got a great shot of pulling through.

Despite whatever trauma Barry went through that brought her to this sad situation, it’s heartwarming to know there are still those who look out for creatures who can’t fend for themselves.

Looking out his window, this man saw a pack of stray dogs roaming the streets. It wasn’t anything out of the ordinary, until he saw something strange. One of the dogs had his head stuck in something that could kill him.

Leaping into action, he raced after the dog to try and help:

Had this stranger not come along, we shudder at the thought of what could have happened to the dog. Without the ability to eat or drink — let alone breathe properly — he surely would have passed away.

This past August, citizens of Ireland’s capital came across something incredibly disturbing. They found a severely injured greyhound wandering the streets. Thankfully, they called the Dublin Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals straight away.

It appeared that someone, for who knows what reason, stabbed her multiple times.

The wounds ran deep, and Cinnamon was very weak…but she had a very good reason to stay alive.

Twelve of them, in fact! Just a few days after she was rescued, she gave birth to this batch of adorableness.

The eight boys and four girls were aptly named Basil, Chilli, Ginger, Jasmine, Lavender, Nutmeg, Paprika, Pepper, Saffron, Sage, Salt, and Wasabi.

Here she is safe and sound, with all of her pups.

Mom and the little ones will rest easy in their foster home until they all find loving forever homes.

It’s amazing what a mother will withstand when she knows she has children to protect…but it’s also so disturbing that someone would put her in that position in the first place. Cinnamon truly is a very strong lady!

When people noticed that a dog was tied to a tree by a river in Arkansas, they called local animal control. Workers arrived and immediately saw that it was much more than a typical abandonment case — this particular pup was tied up so tightly that the mutilation inflicted was truly disturbing and heartbreaking to witness.

The rope was so embedded into the dog’s neck, you can only imagine the amount of suffering he endured before being rescued.

Pine Bluff Animal Friends, a group of volunteers for the local shelter, made sure the little guy got the medical attention he needed right away, no matter what the cost.

The rope was so deep in his flesh that he had to be sedated, having it surgically removed. The operation was a success…

But the organization was out over $300 that they couldn’t afford on their own.

Luckily, the public quickly caught wind of this terrible situation and made sure that all the bills were paid through many generous donations.

It breaks my heart thinking of all the hours this poor pooch sat there while the rope dug its way into his neck. Thank goodness for the incredible volunteers at Pine Bluff Animal Friends and the amazing kindness of all the concerned citizens in the area looking to remedy the situation. This pup, now named River, is on the mend and so incredibly grateful to all the people who helped him out.
