A 23-Year-Old Became A Father And A Grandfather -- All In The Span Of A Few Weeks

If we told you that a 23-year-old became a father and a grandfather over the course of a few weeks, you might not believe us, right? But shockingly enough, this story is true…and it’s honestly pretty amazing.

Although they were friends as children, Tommy Connolly eventually lost touch with his cousin Amy (not her real name), who is now 17 years old. After many years, Connolly received a Facebook message from Amy.

At the time, Connolly was a 23-year-old student at Australia’s Sunshine Coast University.

In college, he ran track and worked full time. His cousin, however, didn’t have the opportunity to lead such a normal life.

At 17, Amy was homeless and functionally illiterate. She also struggled with drug addiction — and she was pregnant. She stopped using drugs upon finding out about the pregnancy, but she still had nowhere to go. She had grown up in and out of foster care, and didn’t have any stable parental figures in her life until she reconnected with her cousin.

Connolly drove down to where Amy was living and picked her up. Over lunch, she shared her heartbreaking story. “It made me really upset,” Connolly recalls. “I was frustrated that I didn’t know earlier. It made me want to do whatever it took to help her. It made any problems I ever had seem irrelevant, because the life she has had is so intense. My focus just immediately turned to her.”

Without any hesitation, Connolly arranged to legally adopt Amy.

She came to live with him, and a few weeks later, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy.

The new family set up a GoFundMe campaign (now closed) to collect donations for Amy and her son, and the new family is doing well.

For her part, Amy describes herself as the “luckiest girl in the world,” and says that she and her baby now have a shot at a normal life thanks to her cousin’s compassion and generosity. “All I wanted was to give this little man a better life than I had,” she wrote on Facebook. “A second chance was all I wanted. Thank you, Tommy, for everything, and for helping me with my spelling.”

Finding The Perfect Dog Is More Than Love At First Sight: Meet The Doggie Dating Site

Online dating has taken the world by storm. One study states that one third of couples have now met through one of the many internet dating platforms. Quite often, the connections are more successful than the relationships between couples that met through other venues. The reason could be that many of these sites use a lot of science, algorithms, and other fancy technological strategies (that only tech-savvy people can really understand) to find the perfect partner for the user.

Elizabeth Holmes, CEO and co-founder of Paws Like Me, figured that this same general principle could be applied to finding the perfect pet for your family.

While working in tech, Holmes ran a rescue group for many years…

…where she learned what it really takes to match a person’s specific situation with the right dog, based on many different factors. During this time, she got flooded with calls from people needing to surrender their pet. She was surprised to find that many of them were willing to foster their own pup for a while.

The reality is that most dogs end up being re-homed at least once in their lifetime.

More often than not, the original family doesn’t want to give up their dog.

However, changes in circumstances can often force a dog to be re-homed.

What Paws Like Me offers is a platform for current pet owners to find a new home for their canine without having to surrender him or her to a shelter.

The current pet owners can also make sure that their baby goes to a truly great home.

The hope is to reduce the amount of dogs that end up in shelters…maybe someday in the future eradicating the need for shelters all together.

With the help and resources from Paws Like Me until a match is found, then the entire process is made much less traumatic for the pup.

Avoiding kill shelters can also, obviously, help save lives.

Perfecting the precise matching algorithm wasn’t easy. But now, Paws Like Me is able to provide a 91% match based on info provided from the current owner or shelter and the person applying to adopt a dog.

That’s right — it’s not only individuals posting their pets online, PLM is partnered with other organizations.

Dogs from 1,000 shelters nationwide (and in Canada) are available for adoption through the site.

About 140 organizations have actually enrolled to partner with the site.

When one of their adoptees is homed by PLM, they get 50% of the adoption fee to help keep their organization afloat as well. A portion of every home-to-home adoption, however, is donated to organizations in need.

Ok, so there’s a bunch of science, sweat, and logic that went into the site…but are there real results?

The Paws Like Me inbox is constantly overwhelmed by positive feedback from users.

One of the very first success stories is from before the algorithm was even perfected: Loki’s

When his parents simply couldn’t financially support him anymore, they wanted to make sure he found a loving new home. They caught wind of the brand new site and insisted on posting their pup even though not all the kinks had been worked out yet. After a few weeks of adopters taking the matching test, one family in Florida ended up being the perfect match. They needed a pup that could handle a small child, cats, another dog (Java, left), and a busy work schedule.

Loki’s new mom couldn’t be happier with her new baby.

“Hi PawsLikeMe, I recommended your website to a friend today who is anxious to get matched to her new dog!! Loki has worked out even better than we could have imagined. He and Java are attached at the hip, so Java is not lonely anymore while we’re at work. We were pretty set on another Rottweiler when we started our search, but your site pointed us in the right direction…we are now firm believers in matching to the right personality first and foremost.”

So, are you looking for a new member of your family?

All of the dogs pictured above are up for adoption, and you can click through to their page using the link directly under their pictures. This is Manzanita. He loves to play and receive lots and lots of belly rubs…but he needs a special kind of home, without any other dogs, cats, or children. He would make a perfect dog if only he could find the right family!

What does the future hold for Paws Like Me?

Holmes looks forward to expanding the platform to help cats get re-homed as well, but, as we all know, cats are very different from dogs, and that will require an entire new matching algorithm. Before expanding to the feline community, Paws Like me wants to dedicate their full attention to making sure their site continues to perform at 100% in the dog department…which includes adding post-adoption support for users. So hold tight, for now, felines.

If you’re interested in either posting a loved one you are no longer able to take care of, or are looking to give a new forever home for a perfect pup, head over to their website and have a look around!

It’s a wonder no one thought to do this earlier…it makes so much sense to factor in all the aspects of your life, needs, and qualities before giving a home to a pup. Paws Like Me was a long time coming in this day and age!

This Pup Looks A Little Different, But To One Family, She Is Just Perfect

At just 10 weeks old, a puppy named Lisa was brought into the Humane Society of Silicon Valley with scars all over her face and inflamed eyelids that required surgery. While she got the care she needed, she would always bear the facial scars, and the staff worried that she would never find a permanent home — people can be pretty shallow, after all.

But they needn’t have worried. On seeing this “unusual-looking” puppy, the Doblar family instantly fell in love.

Meet Lucky, the cutie formerly known as Lisa.

Her inflamed eyes and other facial scars might have made it difficult for her to find a home, but personality-wise, she was just like any other puppy.

HSSV’s Finnegan Dowling said that despite her physical challenges, Lucky was a “pretty typical wiggly, squirmy, happy puppy” and that she was very social. “She loves other dogs and toys, is ridiculously kissy and she’ll lick your nose clean off…She wasn’t hesitant or frightened or timid at all.”

One day, the Doblar family came to the shelter looking for a new dog. They’d recently lost their old pooch, and wanted a special replacement. They immediately fell in love with Lucky.

“She’s pretty funky looking [but] she just has a wonderful, sparkling personality,” Christine Doblar told The Dodo. “The fact that she was going to each of us, and [was] just as loving and exuberant with everyone she greeted…we looked at a few more dogs but nobody could compare to that.”

The Doblars decided to adopt her that very day. They renamed her Lucky — they felt that both she and they were blessed to find one another.

Since then, she’s settled in pretty well.

What a beautiful lady!

Lucky is also getting to know her six-year-old lab brother, Pele, who had been “kind of depressed,” according to Doblar, over the death of the family’s other dog. Now, the two are becoming friends.

It’s important to remember that even if they look funny, all creatures need love and affection. There’s also something that we can take from Lucky, says Dowling. “It doesn’t occur to her that she is different from other puppies. She doesn’t compare herself to others. Whatever caused her injuries, she holds no malice towards anyone for it.”

This Pop Up Cat Café Isn't Only Super Cool, But It's For An Amazing Cause!

A pop up shop is one that opens temporarily in hopes the novelty will bring lots of people through the front door. Recently, North Shore Animal League America created a pop up café in Hoboken, NJ, that is attracting tons of people — through sheer cuteness.

On August 5th, NSALA set up a pop up café that rivals all others. Why? Well, because it doubles as a cat adoption event. Partnering up with Optimum, NSALA put together this cat cafe in the hopes that folks would be drawn in by the adorable, adoptable felines. Their goal?

“Optimum Community is always looking for meaningful ways to support the communities we serve, and partnering with Animal League America on the ‘Tri-State Cats’ initiative helps us achieve just that…[t]he Optimum WiFi Cat Café provides a truly enjoyable event for local families while supporting a great cause by donating to North Shore Animal League America’s rescue and adoption efforts.”

And, what do you know…it’s working!

The pop-up location itself is truly impressive — and will be open until August 9th.

Lots of people, both young and old, have shown up to play with the kitties.

The felines are intrigued…

And sometimes a little bit sassy…

(As cats are wont to be! )

But always ready to strut their stuff for their potential parents!

On Sunday the 9th, there will be a huge adoption event before the shop closes its doors.

Cats, dogs, kittens, and puppies will be present — and looking for their fur-ever homes!

Aurora is just one of the ladies and gents looking for a new home.

But Einstein’s already found his!

As has Felix, this handsome pirate.

But Casey Jones is still looking for a home!

All of these guys from the North Shore Animal League America just want to find love in their forever homes.

For every photo posted to social media via the available Optimum wifi, tagged with #TriStateCats…

$1 is donated to North Shore Animal League America, up to $15,000!

So, even if these babies don’t find homes at the event itself…

They’ve raised funding for more success stories in the future!

Needless to say…everyone comes out a winner here!

Help these adorable animals find a family to love with their whole heart.

REMEMBER — the big finale of the event is this Sunday (08/09) at 716 Washington Street, Hoboken, NJ!

There will be a mobile adoption unit with dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens (in addition to the cats already present at the café). Plus, this is that day that all adopted animals will be able to go home to their new families!

This looks like so much fun, I wish I could go! If you can’t make it, either, you can always donate to help NSALA’s cause…or look into adopting from them in the future!

These Parents Met Their Baby For The First Time, And Their New Family Was Complete

Photographing a birth is a touching way for families to document their latest additions, and photographer Kristen Prosser is no stranger to that. When she agreed to photograph her friends, David and Sarah Olsen, and their new addition to the family, she knew it was going to be a bit different.

The Minnesota couple recently adopted a child, and to mark the moment, they brought Prosser into the hospital where their new baby, Tilly Pearl, was waiting. “I have always wanted to photograph the first meeting of an adopted baby,” Prosser said. “I got to be a part of this incredible moment with one of my best friends!”

The couple, along with Prosser, flew from Minnesota to pick Tilly up in Florida.

There was a lot of anxious waiting.

Finally, the moment arrived! The Olsens met their baby girl for the first time.

It was love at first sight.

Sarah and David Olsen have been married for ten years, and have two sons, Zakary, six, and Levi, three. They’d planned on having a third, but Levi was born with spina bifida, and the chances of their next child having the affliction were high. The Olsens, after months of consideration, decided to adopt. Soon enough, they were matched with Tilly.

Now their family is complete.

As for Prosser, she was thrilled to be able to witness such a touching moment for her friends. “It was one of the most special moments of my life,” she posted to Facebook. “I was so privileged to watch this all unfold. What a perfect example of unconditional and sacrificial love.”

You can see more of Prosser’s work on her website and Facebook page.

Adoption makes a huge difference in everyone’s life, and stories of adoption can be incredible:
