What sounds like a very bad joke is actually true: A squirrel breaks into bar, gets drunk and destroys it. Seriously.
Sam Boulter, the owner of the Honeybourne Railyway Club, walked into his bar on Sunday night and initially thought it had been ransacked by burglars, but then he saw a rodent trashing the place.
The drunk squirrel caused hundreds of dollars worth of damage when it turned on a beer tap and knocked over glasses and beer bottles. Beer and smashed glass bottles littered the floor, according to the BBC.
The 62-year-old owner said he was absolutely stunned when a squirrel emerged from a box of crisps “staggering around.”
“There were bottles scattered around, money scattered around and he had obviously run across the bar’s pumps and managed to turn on the Caffrey’s tap,” Boulter told Western Daily Press. “He must have flung himself on the handle and drank some as he was staggering around all over the place and moving a bit slowly.”
Boulter and two customers spent an hour trying to capture the rodent as he scampered around, but he was finally cornered after making a dash for the men’s toilets.
“I’ve never seen a drunk squirrel before. He looked a bit worse for wear. He is the rowdiest customer we have ever had but I hope he enjoyed his lock-in.”
The squirrel, who refused to leave the premises or pay for damages, was eventually ejected from the establishment through a window.
“It’s safe to say he is now barred from the club for life,” Boulter told the paper.
