An Artist Captures The Fleeting Beauty Of Plants In A Permanent Way

Flowers and plants are beautiful, but they don’t last forever. In fact, the way their beauty fades and withers is why some people find them so appealing. But artist Rachel Dein has other ideas when it comes to displaying these fleeting beings in a beautiful way.

She’s developed a way to preserve them as sculptures. These sculptures quite literally solidify each detail that makes the beauty of plants unlike that of anything else.

She does this by creating plaster casts of the plants.

From them, she cuts stunning tiles.

Dein’s technique developed after she worked as a propmaker for such celebrated institutions as the Royal Opera House and the Globe Theater.

To create her tiles, she uses a variety of plant species.

Sometimes, Dein even paints the tiles so that they look more lifelike.

But even when she doesn’t, they have a very true-to-life feel.

To create the tiles, Dein presses flowers into clay. When they’re removed, they leave perfect impressions.

After that, she pours a mixture of plaster and cement into the clay mold.

When the plaster mixture dries, she peels away the clay, revealing the raised patterns.

Each mold is unique, and can only be used once.

You can see many more of Dein’s tiles on her website, Tactile Studio, and you can even purchase one of your own from her online shop.

Everything About This Rare Flower Is Disgusting...But Also Strangely Fascinating

When you think of flowers, you probably picture pretty bouquets and lush, tastefully scented gardens. Unfortunately, not every flower can evoke such pleasant images. In fact, the Hydnora africana might be the most offensive flower out there.

Its mere existence might disgust you, and what it resembles is not entirely safe for work. Yet its overwhelming negative traits might be outdone by the lovely little secret it harbors.

Hydnora africana looks just like female genitalia, and has the distinct odor of human feces.

If you give this flower to a loved one, they will never speak to you again.

If that wasn’t bad enough, it’s also a parasitic plant.

The Hydnora africana feeds off of nutrients from nearby plants. It continues to prosper by trapping beetles attracted to its awful scent. It then collects their pollen, and releases them once it’s had its fill.

The Hydnora africana is native to Africa.

However, people have successfully grown a few in the U.S. Lucky for us, right?

So why is this ugly plant considered a flower? Well, the inside of the Hydnora africana, also known as “jackal food,” contains a flower-like element.

That’s the only thing that allows this monstrosity to be categorized as a flower.

Despite all of its negative qualities, this flower produces a helpful fruit.

Each fruit produces tens of thousands of seeds, and it takes over two years to fully ripen. The fruit is said to carry medicinal properties.

I suppose this bug-kidnapping, horrid-looking, putrid-smelling “flower” isn’t so bad. Once you get past all the negatives, it’s just another plant that produces fruit — a fruit that I vow to never, ever try.

Skip The Mess Of Transplanting With The Pot That Grows With Your Plant

Houseplants are pretty awesome. They add a pop of green, they freshen the air, and sometimes they even produce flowers or edible items! But taking care of them can be tricky, especially when they get too big for their pots and have to upgrade to a bigger space. And if you don’t get to them in time, they can become crowded and very unhappy.

But now, there’s a pot that actually grows with your plant! No more stocking up on flowerpots.

It’s aptly called the Growth pot, and was inspired by origami. It was designed by Studio Ayaskan, a creative set of twins who split their time between London and Istanbul.

Made from a foldable material, the pot expands as the plant grows, taking on a new appearance in the process.

The only thing you have to do as a plant owner is add in more soil to fill in the space.

The designers describe their creation as something akin to the cycles of nature: “There is a strong disconnect between nature and the environments we are used to and comfortable in as humans.”

It also comes in a larger size for bigger plants.

“In nature, everything evolves, adapts, grows, blooms, degrades, dies, gets absorbed, reused. Nothing stands still…Everything flows.”

If you thought flowerpots were simply utilitarian, this one will elevate home gardening to an artistic level. Combine that with the practicality of an expanding pot, and you have the perfect item for even the most inexperienced gardener.

Growth is currently in its preproduction phases, but Studio Ayaskan is working with manufacturers to make the concept into a reality. You can see more of their work on their website, Facebook, and Twitter.

There are a lot of really clever designs out there. Some are practical, while others are just delightful:
