In Beauty and the Beast, Belle is chased by a snarling pack of wolves. If the Beast hadn't saved her, she and her horse, Phillipe, would surely have been torn to shreds. Unfortunately, real-life man Ben Cochrane had no Beast to save him from a similar situation.

In 1922, Cochrane was working as a fur trapper on Lake Winnipeg. His remains were found there along with the remains of the wolves he had fought. Judging from this evidence, Cochrane had been attacked by wolves. He shot seven of them to death and then ran out of ammunition.

He then clubbed four more wolves to death with his gun. Then the gun broke and he was no longer able to defend himself from the rest of the wolves. It was a valiant effort.
