We are blown away by the genius artists capable of transforming the most plentiful forms of trash into recycled art that people from all over the world covet. Michael (or Moerkey) is an Australian based artist doing just that. He uses old keys and coins to create recycled art that serves as bottles, lampshades and other detailed accessories and sculptures that are almost too cool to be true.
The best part is he doesn’t take away anything from the keys and other scrap metal he transforms, instead he allows them to tell an even deeper story by keeping them in their original form.
Michael explains on his Etsy shop how he got started creating recycled art, he writes: “When I was supposed to be cleaning out my shed, I came across some old copper pipe saved from a previous renovation. I cut it up into rings and started making it into spheres. The first ones were a bit rough but once I worked out the technique I got creative.”
Michael doesn’t like to throw things away, he even admits he’s “a bit of a hoarder.” His desire to keep things out of the trash has suited his art, and the environment, well. He adds, “(I) searched around for all those old keys and copper wire, that were no longer needed, and got creative with them.”
Keys are full of stories, the first moment you are handed the keys to your new home or automobile is such an exciting moment. Coins are another from of scrap metal that is full of history, as coins pass between so many different hands throughout the years.
Michael’s incredible recycled art ranges in price starting around $65 and reaching well beyond $250.
