The Secret Service was created the day Abraham Lincoln was assassinated!

When Abraham Lincoln wasn’t busy kicking slavery’s butt, he was leading the formation of the United State’s Secret Service. This federal law enforcement agency was being created in response to the report that one third of the currency in circulation at the time was counterfeit.

The legislation creating the agency was on Lincoln’s desk on April 14th, 1865-the day of his assassination. The Secret Service was commissioned 4 months later in Washington D.C. As the “Secret Service Division” of the Department of Treasury with the mission of suppressing counterfeiting. It was the first U.S domestic intelligence and counterintelligence agency.
