With negative news blasting at us left and right, it’s easy to starting thinking badly about the planet we live on, but these spectacular images surely prove that our world is still a beautiful place. Pictured above, Godafoss, or “Goðafoss,” as it’s technically called in Icelandic, is known as the “Waterfall of the Gods.” While impressive all year long, there is something especially alluring about it in its frozen, winter dress.

While you’d expect to find sand at a beach, this one is not only red, there is no sand. The phenomena is caused by a type of seaweed Sueda. It starts growing during April and May, stays green during the summer, but starts turning a vibrant red hue in autumn. It’s located in the biggest wetland and reed marsh in the world, and is home to more than 260 kinds of birds and 399 kinds of wild animals.

Antelope Canyon in northern Arizona was formed by erosion of sandstone, primarily due to flash flooding. The Navajo name for the area is “the place where water runs through rock.”
