You’ll probably come across your fair share of sand castles at the beach this summer. However, most of them will be small, cute, and completely pale in comparison to the work of Ray Villafane. Villafane is a world-renowned expert food carver. In 2008, Villafane challenged himself to expand his skills by including sand castle creation to his repertoire.
This might sound like an odd endeavor, but it will make sense when you see what he can create. Villafane was invited in 2009 to create an amazing (and terrifying) sand sculpture inspired by Dante’s Inferno on a beach in Jesolo, Italy. Villafane’s resulting work is a sand creation the likes of which the world has never seen before.
The project started with a wooden structure to support the sculpture.
Crafting the top of the sculpture. Just wait; it gets very creepy, very quickly.

Taking shape. Look at those faces…nightmare fuel!
A demon head up close.

Look closely and you can see this demon is eating a human snack.
