It’s not everyday you see how giraffes sleep, that’s because they require the least amount of sleep compared to all other mammals. In fact, giraffes only sleep around 30 minutes every day, and they typically do so for just a few minutes at a time. Until the 1950’s giraffes tricked researchers into believing they didn’t sleep at all!
Turns out, just like every other mammal, giraffes have to sleep at some point. Even though giraffes are the tallest animals, they have a lot to worry about in regards to predators. It takes the long-necked (and long-legged) giraffe a lot of time to get up after lying down, and as a result their sleeping habits have evolved to be quick in order to avoid too much liability.
Drinking water is also difficult for giraffes because their neck is long but not long enough to reach the ground. Thankfully, they are able to get most of the water they require through the plants that they eat.
Despite how infrequently giraffes stop to sleep they sure look adorable doing it thanks to their awkward sleeping stance in which they use their body as the perfect pillow. Good thing they don’t sleep too much longer or they might end up with a pretty bad neck ache!
