Building a skyscraper is a tricky business, but when it's one of the new 105 story Trade Center Towers, things get even trickier. The pure logistics of putting together a building this tall are staggering, but one important issue was solved in a rather unique manner.
As the building rose towards the sky, workers were finding it difficult to descend from the top, eat lunch and return within the allotted 30 minute lunch break. There were just too many workers and too few lifts to service the lunchtime rush.
To solve this problem, the construction company came up with a novel idea. They contracted Subway to run a restaurant in a container that was suspended at the same level to where the builder were working. As the builders moved up, so did the restaurant.
While the concept was a roaring success, not all the burly customers connected with the menu. A company spokesman said that the Subway in the Sky was a great success, but some of the staff preferred a more greasy option for lunch. The concept did however save some 90 lift rides per day.
