The owner of the restaurant worked at a McDonald's in Vienna, Austria in the 1970s and decided he wanted to buy a franchise in the 1990s in Iraq.
However, because of economic restrictions placed on Saddam Hussein's government, McDonald's turn him down.
To fight this, he opened the knock-off chain. For those unaware, the Kurds were oppressed by Saddam Hussein's regime, and were happy to see the Americans invade Iraq to overthrow the government and establish a democracy.
Because of this, MaDonal serves all American military personnel for free!
