Some gold medalists from the 2014 winter Olympics are also in possession of meteorite! Here's how
The 2014 winter Olympics in Sochi were, overall, a success. And so were their medals. Or at least they were odd. Some of the gold medals contained fragments of a meteorite that hit Russia on February 15, 2013.
On that day, the Chelyabinsk meteor entered earth's atmosphere at about 60 times the speed of sound. The meteor exploded in the air over Chelyabinsk Oblast. The blast sent gas, dust and meteor fragments flying.
Some of these fragments were gathered and put into the gold medals that were given out on the meteorite's anniversary. Seven medals were given out with these fragments.
