Teddy Atlas was an assistant to Hall of Fame boxing trainer Cus D'Amato, but was fired in 1983 after an altercation with Mike Tyson. Tyson, who was sixteen years old at the time, had been sexually inappropriate with an eleven year family member of Atlas.
Teddy put a .38 caliber handgun to Tyson's ear and warned him that he would kill him if he ever touched any of his family members again. According to Tyson, he 'only' grabbed the girl's butt. Not only was Atlas dismissed from the Catskill Boxing Club, he was also told that he was no longer welcome at D'Amato's house or around any of his adopted children (his fighters whom he had legally adopted, which included Mike Tyson).
Tyson was arrested in July 1991 for the rape of 18-year-old Desiree Washington, Miss Black Rhode Island. On March 26, 1992, he was convicted of the rape and sentenced to six years in prison. During his time in prison, he converted to Islam.
Atlas' career continued, and one of his biggest success stories was Michael Moorer, whom he trained and guided to the world heavyweight title in 1994. He also trained Alexander Povetkin to win the regular WBA heavyweight championship on the 27th of August, 2011.
