With England being separated from France by only the English Channel, London faced heavy air raids by the Germans in 1942. The Germans would not stop until Britain was theirs.
In order to push the Germans back to central Europe and eventually end the war, Allied forces, namely the United States and Great Britain, determined an invasion of continental Europe was imperative.
At a secret conference, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill, along with military leaders, determined Normandy, France to be the best location for the invasion. The plan, code named "Operation Overlord," involved a plan of attack on the five beaches of Normandy, code named Omaha, Utah, Sword, Juno and Gold.
During the war, many Brits took to newspapers to get their news and to do the crossword to distract them from every day life. One of these crosswords, coincidentally, contained the words "Utah," "Omaha," "Mulberry" and "Overlord" in the month leading up to the invasion!
MI-5, Britain's counter-espionage division questioned the author and determined it was just a huge coincidence and there was no espionage taking place.
