The Tsar Bomba or the Tsar Bomb was the most powerful nuclear weapon ever detonated. Thankfully, it wasn't used on inhabited land, but rather in the easternmost part of Europe near the Arctic Ocean in the northern part of Russia.

The Soviet Union detonated this massive weapon on October 30, 1961 on the Novaya Zemlya Archipelago. It was the most powerful artificial explosion in human history.

The Soviets detonated it as a way to show the Americans their power at the 1960 United Nations General Assembly. The bomb had the power of 50-58 megatons of TNT. The mushroom cloud from the detonation was about 40 miles high.

Wooden houses within hundreds of miles of the explosion were destroyed and radio communication in the area was down for an hour.
