Bill Gates and Steve Jobs are portrayed as enemies, but they were much closer than you think

Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were rivals, but in Gates' opinion they were never enemies. Gates has aired his opinion about Jobs on various occasions, and Jobs had much to say about Gates as well.

Bill Gates on Steve Jobs: "Steve Jobs was fundamentally odd, and weirdly flawed as a human being." "He really never knew much about technology, but he had an amazing instinct for what works."

Looking at what Steve had to say about Bill, one would think there was animosity: "He'd be a broader guy if he had dropped acid once or gone off to an ashram when he was younger." And, "He just shamelessly ripped off other people's ideas."

The atmosphere changed in 2007 when the two did an event together. Some months before Jobs died, Gates paid him a long visit. "We spent literally hours reminiscing and talking about the future," said Gates. When Jobs was dying, Gates wrote him a letter, saying he should feel great about his achievements.

According to Jobs' wife, Steve kept that letter by his bedside. She said that Steve's biography really doesn't paint a picture of the mutual respect between the two. Gates said, "There was no peace to make. There was no [cause for] forgiveness."
