The king of Belgium fought alongside his troops during WWI!
Albert the First reigned as King of the Belgians from 1909 to 1934.
When Germany subsequently invaded Belgium on August 4th, 1914, King Albert took personal command of the Belgian army. Even though 99 % of the country was overrun, under the King’s leadership, the Army held the Germans up long enough for France and Great Britain to assemble the troops needed to stop the Germans.
King Albert, however, was not the king of King who sat out the war in safety and comfort. He was a bad-ass. In fact he was so bad-ass that he fought with his troops and shared their dangers.
And not only that; his wife, Queen Elisabeth, worked as a nurse at the front. The King also allowed his 14 year old son to enlist in the Belgian army as a private and fight in the ranks.
King Albert became the only chief of state during the war to fly over the front, not once, but on several occasions. This king was unlike our current world leaders who hide while sending all their troops to do the dirty job for them.
