Buzz Lightyear’s classic line “To Infinity and Beyond” has seen usage not only on T-shirts, but among philosophers and mathematical theorists as well.
And not only that, this catch phrase has even helped people through struggle, or at least that’s what Walter Marino states. It was reported in 2008 that a Walter and his son had continually repeated the phrase to help them keep track of each other while treading water for 15 hours in the Atlantic Ocean.
After a current swept the boy and Walter out to the sea, darkness fell, and the sound of rescue helicopters and boats grew faint until they were nonexistent. His son didn’t really care about what was going on because of his autism. Walter states that thanks to his lack of fear they were both able to keep calm and wait until someone showed up to rescue them.
During the night, his son began to drift away because of the current, and in order to keep track of where his son was located, Walter kept shouting “To infinity” while receiving “and Beyond” as an answer from his son.
After hours from being rescued by some fishermen, Walter was able to reunite with his son after the coast guard found him.
