A prisoner escaped jail by mailing himself out of prison!

Richard Lee McNair was sentenced to life in prison in 1987 after murdering two people in North Dakota. The state really struggled enforcing his sentences, though, because he constantly tried to escape. Lee was 3 successful in 3 of his escape attempts.

In '88 McNair managed to lube his hands up so much with chapstick that he wriggled out of his cuffs at the police station. He slipped out of the station and the cops had to chase him all around town.

After a few years in the state pen, McNair pulled a classic and climbed through the air ducts in the prison.I didn't know that was even possible outside of Mission Impossible. He actually evaded police for ten months. Once they locked him up again, they put him in a maximum security federal prison. The next escape plan took him awhile to hatch.

In 2006, McNair got a job fixing mail bags. He took the opportunity to stuff himself into one of the mail bags and got himself forklifted to the warehouse. He got out of the bag, dusted off, and walked away clean and free. He was later found by police walking the railway line where they questioned him and ended up letting him go. Great policing guys. He was eventually caught again and put back in prison.
