9 Things Banned in San Francisco







Is there more to San Francisco, California, than warm weather and beautiful people? You bet there is! Read on to discover what 9 things are banned in San Francisco!




1. Soda 


You won’t find any vending machine on the city property that sells soda or even sport drinks. Vending machines can sell juices that must be 100 percent fruits or vegetables with no added sweeteners. Mayor Gavin Newsom states he tries to curb a leading cause of obesity and diabetes.




 2. Happy Meals


The San Francisco Board of Supervisors has banned the Happy Meal. Now the Meals have to meet nutritional guidelines if restaurants wish to include a toy with the food purchase. In this way, government tries to fight children’s obesity, which is a serious problem of nowadays.

 




3. Bottled Water

Bottled water cannot be sold from vending machines. Also San Francisco city government is not allowed to use city money to buy bottled water for its employees, because the expenses were too high – city spent nearly $500,000 a year on bottled water.





4. Segways

The mayor of San Francisco considers Segways to promote laziness. That’s why they are not allowed on sidewalks or bike paths.





5. Baby Animals

It’s illegal to sell baby chickens, ducks, and rabbits in San Francisco.





6. Plastic bags 

Plastic bags are currently not allowed at large chain supermarkets and drug stores. But soon they may be banned at all stores.






7. Arizona State

As a protest to the state’s strict immigration policies, San Francisco refrained from entering into new or amended contracts to purchase goods or services from any company that is headquartered in Arizona. The City officials and employees are not allowed to travel to Arizona (except for police officers investigating a crime).





8. Smoking

Tobacco cigarettes are not allowed to be smoked in buildings. Smokers are able to buy cigarettes in tobacco shops, liquor stores, and other establishments that don’t handle prescription medicines.





9. Sitting and Lying on the Street

In order to curb aggressive panhandling in the City, sitting and lying on the street between the hours of 11pm and 7am is banned.
